How a dog food portion is calculated

A portion is a calorie target divided by the energy density of the food. The calorie target starts with resting energy requirement:

RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75

That is multiplied by a life-stage factor to give the maintenance energy requirement (MER), then converted to food:

grams per day = MER ÷ kcal per gram

Why the food you pick changes the answer

Dry dog foods sit anywhere between roughly 3,200 and 4,200 kcal per kg. The same 20 kg dog on the same calorie target can need 250 g of one food and 320 g of another. That is why this calculator uses the energy figure held for the product you select rather than an industry average, and tells you when a figure is an estimate rather than manufacturer verified.
