A portion is a calorie target divided by the energy density of the food. The calorie target starts with resting energy requirement:

Why the food you pick changes the answer
Dry dog foods sit anywhere between roughly 3,200 and 4,200 kcal per kg. The same 20 kg dog on the same calorie target can need 250 g of one food and 320 g of another. That is why this calculator uses the energy figure held for the product you select rather than an industry average, and tells you when a figure is an estimate rather than manufacturer verified.
Why grams beat cups
A cup is a volume, not a weight, and kibble density varies. We only show a cup measure when the product has a kcal-per-cup figure on file — we never invent a cup weight. A cheap kitchen scale is the single biggest accuracy upgrade a client can make.
